The Friendship Nature Reserve is the first set of twin parks operating across the Finnish-Russian border dedicated to maintaining and studying the precious natural environment of the frontier zone, in addition to offering information, adventures and hiking opportunities. On the Russian side of the border, the Friendship Nature Reserve includes the 47,500-hectare Kostomuksha Strict Nature Reserve, and on the Finnish side, the roughly 29,000-hectare Friendship Park that comprises five separate areas located in the Town of Kuhmo and the Municipality of Suomussalmi.
